In 1297, when Scotland was under heavy English control, Wallace had already made a name for himself as a rebel leader. But what really cemented his place in history was the Battle of Stirling Bridge.
The English army—well-equipped, much larger, and confident—marched toward Stirling, where Wallace and Andrew de Moray waited with their men. The English had cavalry, heavy armor, and thousands of troops. Wallace had mostly farmers, commoners, and a few seasoned fighters.
The key was the bridge: it was narrow, only wide enough for two horsemen side by side. Wallace realized this was his chance. Instead of charging into the open field (where the English would crush him), he waited until about half of the English army had crossed. Then he struck.
His forces surged forward, cutting off the bridge and trapping the English knights on the far side. He knew they couldn’t maneuver well in the boggy ground beside the river. Panic set in. Horses floundered, men drowned, and the once-confident English army broke apart.
Despite being outnumbered, Wallace’s strategy turned the tide. Thousands of English soldiers were lost that day, and Scotland suddenly believed it could fight back. Wallace was soon made Guardian of Scotland. |
